Converting MongoDB from Replica Set to Standalone

Sometimes, you might need to take a database that was part of a cluster and run it as a single, independent server. This guide explains how to convert a MongoDB Replica Set member into a Standalone instance.

Why Convert to Standalone?

A Replica Set is great for production because it provides backups and high availability. However, for local development, testing, or maintenance tasks, running a standalone instance is much simpler and uses fewer resources.

Step 1: Shut Down the Instance

The first step in this transition is to safely stop the MongoDB service or process that is currently running as a member of the replica set. This ensures that no data corruption occurs during the configuration change.

How to Set Up a Single Node Replica Set in MongoDB

Why Use a Single Node Replica Set?

A standalone MongoDB instance is simple, but it doesn't support some of the most powerful features required for modern app development. By configuring a single node as a replica set, you unlock the ability to use multi-document transactions, which are essential for maintaining data integrity in complex applications.

The Configuration Process

Setting this up is easy! All you need to do is tell MongoDB that this instance belongs to a set. You do this by adding the --replSet flag when you start your mongod process from the command line, or by adding the replication setting to your configuration file.

What are Voting Members?

How MongoDB Elects a Primary Node
