Fake UPI IDs: The Hidden Trap in Your Google Pay

Sending money on Google Pay is so fast that we often forget to check the details. Scammers are exploiting this speed by creating Fake UPI IDs that look almost identical to real ones. Before you send your next payment, you need to know how to spot these digital imposters.

1. What is a Fake UPI ID?

Scammers create UPI IDs using names of famous brands, banks, or even government schemes. For example, instead of a real ID like support@bank, they might use support.helpline@okaxis. They hope you'll see the name "Support" and trust it without looking at the full ID.

2. The "Look-Alike" Technique

Fraudsters often use small misspellings that our eyes easily miss, like amazon.pay@upi instead of the official one. They might also add random numbers or words like "Verify" or "Official" to make the fake ID seem more legitimate.

3. Google Pay's Verification Name

The most powerful tool you have is the Verified Name. When you enter a UPI ID or mobile number, Google Pay fetches the name registered with the bank. If you are paying "Airtel" but the name appears as "Rajesh Kumar," stop immediately! That is a major red flag.

3 Steps to Stay 100% Safe

Slow Down: Never rush a payment. Take 5 seconds to read the full UPI ID character by character.

Match the Name: Ensure the name shown by Google Pay matches the person or business you intend to pay.

Small Test Amount: If you're paying someone new for the first time, send ₹1 first to confirm it reaches the right person before sending the full amount.
