Introduction: The Next Shift in Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence is advancing rapidly. While you have likely used tools to create text, write code, or generate images, a major transition is happening from systems that just generate content to systems that take action. The easiest way to understand the core difference is:

  • Generative AI = Create
  • Agentic AI = Act toward a goal

What is Generative AI?

Generative AI is designed to produce new content based directly on your instructions or prompts. When you give it an instruction, it returns created output such as:

  • Written explanations, articles, and summaries
  • Programming code examples in languages like Java
  • Images, audio, video, and creative concepts

Example: If you ask Generative AI to "Write an email requesting one day of leave," it crafts the text for you immediately. However, it stops there. You still have to copy the draft, open your email client, and send it yourself.

What is Agentic AI?

Agentic AI goes several steps further. The word comes from "agent"—an entity capable of taking action to achieve a specified objective. Instead of just creating content, Agentic AI works through multiple steps autonomously toward completing a goal.

Example: If you tell an Agentic AI system to "Help me organize a business trip," it doesn't just list ideas. It can understand your goal, search flight schedules, compare hotel prices, check your calendar, prepare an itinerary, and ask for your confirmation before finalizing bookings.

How Agentic AI Uses Generative AI and Tools

Agentic AI does not replace Generative AI—it builds on top of it. An agentic system uses Generative AI as one capability alongside external software tools:

  • Databases & APIs: Retrieving live business data or communicating with other software applications.
  • Calendars & Email Systems: Checking schedules and dispatching verified messages.
  • Calculators & Web Search: Gathering real-time facts and running precise calculations.

Is Agentic AI Fully Autonomous?

No, Agentic AI operates across different levels of autonomy depending on permissions and security needs:

  1. Low Autonomy: The AI proposes an action, but requires human approval for every step.
  2. Medium Autonomy: The AI handles routine tasks automatically and pauses for human confirmation before major actions.
  3. High Autonomy: The AI executes multiple pre-approved actions independently and returns the completed outcome.

Critical actions like making payments, modifying production systems, or deleting data will always require strict human oversight and proper controls.
