Logging is one of the most important aspects of software development. It’s the primary way developers understand what their application is doing when it's running in the real world. In Spring Boot, logging is built-in and ready to use, but knowing how to control it is what makes you a pro.
1. What Exactly is Logging?
Think of logging as a "black box" recorder for your app. Instead of using System.out.println(), which is hard to manage, we use logging frameworks. They help us categorize messages into levels like INFO, DEBUG, and ERROR.
2. Why You Need Logging
- Troubleshooting: When an error happens, logs tell you the exact line of code and the state of the app.
- Performance Tracking: You can see how long certain operations take to complete.
- Security: Keeping a record of who accessed what helps in identifying malicious activity.
3. Logback: The Default Hero
By default, Spring Boot uses Logback. It's incredibly fast, provides advanced configuration options, and even supports "rolling" log files—which means it can automatically start a new log file every day so your server's storage doesn't get full!
4. Simple Configuration
You don't need to be an expert to start. Simply adding a few lines to your application.properties file allows you to change the logging level or even tell Spring Boot where to save your log files on your computer.
