What is ServletInputStream?

In Java web applications, incoming client requests often carry more than simple URL parameters. When handling raw binary uploads—such as images, PDF documents, or raw streams of data—a standard parameter parser is not enough.

This is where ServletInputStream comes in. It provides an input stream to read binary data directly from the client request body.

How to Obtain ServletInputStream

You can get an instance of ServletInputStream using the getInputStream() method of the ServletRequest (or HttpServletRequest) interface:

ServletInputStream inputStream = request.getInputStream();

Important Rule: Within a single request handling lifecycle, you can call either getInputStream() or getReader(), but never both, otherwise an IllegalStateException will be thrown.

Key Features and Methods

  • readLine(byte[] b, int off, int len): Reads input lines of bytes starting at a designated offset into a buffer array until a newline character is encountered.
  • Inherits from java.io.InputStream: Provides standard byte-oriented read capabilities like read(), available(), and close().
  • Ideal for File Uploads: Perfect for handling multipart form data, files, and custom binary protocols directly from web clients.
