Introduction

The Adapter Design Pattern is a structural pattern designed to bridge two incompatible interfaces so they can collaborate without modifying their existing code. A tangible real-world analogy to understand this concept is using a Card Reader to transfer photos from a memory card to a laptop.

The Incompatibility Problem: Memory Card vs. Laptop

Consider this common situation:

  • You have stored over 100 photos in JPEG format on a portable Memory Card (such as a MicroSD card).
  • You want to transfer and view these photos on your Laptop.
  • However, your laptop only provides standard USB ports and lacks a direct slot compatible with the form factor of the memory card.

Because the memory card and the laptop have completely incompatible physical interfaces, direct connection is impossible.

How the Card Reader Acts as an Adapter

To make these two incompatible devices communicate, we introduce a Card Reader:

  • The memory card is inserted into the card slot of the card reader.
  • The card reader is then plugged directly into the laptop’s USB port.
  • Now, the laptop can read the data stored in the memory card and copy the photos seamlessly.

In this scenario, the Card Reader acts as the exact real-world counterpart of an Adapter in software engineering.

Adapter Pattern Role Mapping

Pattern Role Real-World Component Role Description
Client Laptop Wants to read and transfer photo files
Target Interface Laptop USB Port The interface standard understood by the Laptop
Adaptee Memory Card Holds the data with an incompatible slot interface
Adapter Card Reader Bridges memory card pins to laptop USB protocol
