In Java web development, a Servlet Filter is a reusable Java component that intercepts incoming client HTTP requests before they reach a destination resource (such as a Servlet, JSP, or static HTML file), and intercepts outgoing responses before they are delivered back to the client.
Filters act like security checkpoints or processing gates placed in front of your servlets. Rather than repeating tasks like authentication checks, input logging, or character encoding inside every single servlet, you can encapsulate these cross-cutting concerns inside filters.
Common Real-World Uses of Filters
Servlet filters are widely used across modern enterprise Java applications for tasks such as:
- Authentication & Access Control: Verifying user sessions and blocking unauthorized visitors from accessing protected resources.
- Logging & Auditing: Recording incoming IP addresses, requested endpoints, and timestamps for performance monitoring or security auditing.
- Data Formatting & Compression: Compressing outgoing responses (e.g., GZIP) or standardizing character encoding (e.g., UTF-8) across all requests.
- Image/Content Modification: Dynamically adding watermarks, headers, or modifying payload data.
Key Features of the Filter Mechanism
- Pluggable Architecture: You can add or remove filters simply by editing deployment settings (such as
web.xmlor annotations) without modifying or recompiling existing servlets. - Two-Way Interception: A filter processes the request before it reaches the target servlet, and continues executing during the response return journey.
- Chaining Capability: Multiple filters can be combined into a sequential chain to execute complex workflows in a well-defined order.
