Setting up Apache Tomcat is an essential first step for running Java servlets and JSP web applications. This beginner-friendly guide walks you through downloading, extracting, setting up the JAVA_HOME path, and starting the Tomcat server from scratch.
Step 1: Download the Apache Tomcat Binary Archive
- Visit the official Apache Tomcat download site or archive repository.
- Select the version suitable for your project and navigate into the
bindirectory. - Download the official binary distribution
.zipfile (for Windows).
Step 2: Extract and Organize Tomcat Files
Once downloaded, extract the ZIP file to your preferred drive (e.g., D:\Tomcat):

Tomcat. - Inside, you will find core folders including
bin(executable scripts),conf(server configurations), andwebapps(applications directory).

Tomcat/bin/directory. - Open
catalina.batwith a text editor (e.g., Notepad or TextPad). - Specify your installed JDK path at the beginning of the file:
Save the changes and close the editor.
Step 4: Start the Tomcat Server
Now launch Tomcat using the Command Prompt:
- Open Command Prompt and change to the Tomcat
bindirectory:cd D:\Tomcat\bin - Execute the following command to start the server:
catalina.bat run
Step 5: Verify the Installation in Your Browser
