SUBSCRIBE NOWWhat is the Builder Design Pattern?
The Builder Design Pattern is a foundational creational design pattern identified by the Gang of Four (GoF). It aims to separate the construction of a complex object from its representation, allowing the exact same construction sequence to create diverse object representations.
In standard object-oriented programming, instantiating an object with numerous optional or mandatory attributes often forces developers to rely on constructors with endless parameter lists (known as the telescoping constructor anti-pattern) or messy setter chains that risk inconsistent states. The Builder pattern eliminates these bottlenecks cleanly.
Core Components of the Builder Pattern
- Product: The complex object being constructed, typically containing multiple configurable parts.
- Builder (Interface): Specifies an abstract interface for creating parts of a
Productobject step by step. - Concrete Builder: Implements the
Builderinterface, keeps track of the representation being assembled, and provides an interface for retrieving the final product. - Director: Orchestrates the building steps in a specific sequence using the
Builderinterface.
When Should You Use It?
- When the algorithm for creating a complex object should be independent of the parts that make up the object and how they are assembled.
- When the construction process must allow different representations for the object that is constructed.
- When you want to prevent object construction in an incomplete or mutable invalid state.
