The Query Object Pattern is a fundamental Object-Relational Metadata Mapping Pattern introduced in Martin Fowler's classic reference, Patterns of Enterprise Application Architecture (PofEAA).
Core Definition: A Query Object is an object that represents a database query and can automatically generate SQL queries on the fly based on the context supplied.
Instead of writing raw, hardcoded SQL strings throughout your application (which can easily break whenever database table or column names change), you construct query criteria using object-oriented concepts like classes, attributes, and comparison expressions.
How the Query Object Works: Context to SQL
Consider an e-commerce application where you want to find all products with a price greater than 100:
- Object Context Supplied:
Product.price > 100(whereProductis your domain class andpriceis a field on that class). - Interpretation: The Query Object receives this domain criteria and looks up the underlying mapping metadata.
- Dynamic SQL Generation: It translates the domain context into native database SQL on the fly:
SELECT * FROM product WHERE price > 100;
Key Features of the Query Object Pattern
- Refers to Objects, Not Tables: Developers build search filters referencing entity classes and properties instead of remembering specific relational table and column names.
- Database Schema Independence: If column names or table layouts change in the database, the updates are isolated to metadata mappings in a single place without modifying business logic.
- Works Hand-in-Hand with Metadata Mapping: The Query Object relies directly on Metadata Mapping to accurately translate entity fields into database columns.
- Real-World Usage: This pattern forms the core foundation of modern object-oriented query engines, such as the JPA Criteria API and Hibernate Criteria.
