SUBSCRIBE NOWWhat is ResultSetMetaData in JDBC?
In database terms, metadata refers to "data about data." While a ResultSet holds the actual records retrieved from your database table, the ResultSetMetaData interface provides comprehensive structural information about those results.
By using ResultSetMetaData, your Java application can dynamically discover details like how many columns were returned, their column names, data types, and display sizes without knowing the table schema in advance.
How to Obtain ResultSetMetaData
You do not instantiate ResultSetMetaData directly. Instead, you obtain it directly from an active ResultSet object using the getMetaData() method:
ResultSet rs = stmt.executeQuery("SELECT * FROM Employee");
// Getting metadata from the ResultSet
ResultSetMetaData rsmd = rs.getMetaData();
Key Methods of ResultSetMetaData
The ResultSetMetaData interface provides several powerful inspection methods:
-
getColumnCount(): Returns the total number of columns available in theResultSet. -
getColumnName(int column): Returns the actual name of the specified column (using 1-based indexing). -
getColumnTypeName(int column): Retrieves the database-specific SQL data type name (such asVARCHAR,INT, orDATE). -
getTableName(int column): Returns the table name to which the specified column belongs. -
getColumnDisplaySize(int column): Indicates the maximum standard character width required to display the column value.
Why is ResultSetMetaData Useful?
ResultSetMetaData is indispensable when building generic database viewers, report generators, export utilities (such as CSV/JSON converters), and enterprise frameworks where the SQL query or schema structure is dynamic and determined at runtime.
