What Is a JDBC DataSource?

In early JDBC development, applications primarily relied on the DriverManager class to establish database connections. While simple for small scripts, managing raw database connections manually presents significant drawbacks in real-world enterprise applications.

Introduced in the javax.sql package, the DataSource interface provides a standard, modern alternative to DriverManager for establishing database connections in Java.

Why Use DataSource Instead of DriverManager?

The DataSource interface acts as a factory for physical database connections and brings several powerful benefits:

  • Connection Pooling: Instead of opening and closing an expensive physical connection for every query, pooled connections can be reused, drastically boosting application performance.
  • Distributed Transactions: Supports XA connections and distributed transactions across multiple heterogeneous databases.
  • JNDI Support: Connection details (such as server hostname, port, and credentials) can be configured within an application server and looked up via JNDI, removing hard-coded configuration from your Java source code.

Basic Implementation Overview

A DataSource object can be registered with a naming service using JNDI, allowing your application code to look it up effortlessly:

Context ctx = new InitialContext();
DataSource ds = (DataSource) ctx.lookup("jdbc/MyDatabasePool");
Connection conn = ds.getConnection();

Once retrieved, you use the standard Connection object just as you normally would, while the underlying connection pool transparently handles lifecycle and reuse behind the scenes.
