SUBSCRIBE NOWIntroduction to PreparedStatement in JDBC
In Java Database Connectivity (JDBC), the PreparedStatement interface is one of the most powerful and widely used tools for executing SQL statements. It represents a pre-compiled SQL query that allows you to run parameterized commands efficiently and securely.
The PreparedStatement interface extends the standard Statement interface, which means it inherits all the capabilities of Statement while adding features specifically optimized for dynamic query execution and repeated executions.
How PreparedStatement Works
When your Java application needs to talk to a database, it follows a simple and structured flow:
- Establish Connection: Connect to the database using the
DriverManager.getConnection()method. - Prepare the Query: Call
connection.prepareStatement(sql)passing a parameterized query. The database parses, compiles, and optimizes this query only once! - Bind Values: Use setter methods to provide real values for each placeholder (
?). - Execute: Call
executeQuery()orexecuteUpdate()to retrieve or update data.
Working with Parameterized Queries
In JDBC, parameters inside a SQL statement are represented using the question mark symbol (?). Before executing the query, you must substitute each question mark with an actual value; otherwise, an SQLException is thrown.
Values are supplied using appropriate setter methods like setString(), setInt(), or setDouble(), where the first argument indicates the 1-based parameter index:
PreparedStatement pstmt = connection.prepareStatement(sql);
pstmt.setString(1, "GBR"); // Sets first parameter
pstmt.setString(2, "England"); // Sets second parameter
ResultSet rs = pstmt.executeQuery();
Why PreparedStatement Improves Performance
The key advantage of PreparedStatement is pre-compilation:
- One-time Compilation: The SQL query is compiled and stored directly within the database server upon creation.
- Faster Execution: When running the same query multiple times with different parameter values, the database skips query parsing, syntax verification, and execution planning.
- Cleaner Code: Parameter binding eliminates messy string concatenations and drastically simplifies data formatting.
