In multi-tier enterprise Java (J2EE) architecture, software components are structured into three distinct layers to ensure modularity, separation of concerns, and clean scalability:
- Presentation Tier: Manages user interactions, UI views, and HTTP requests.
- Business Tier: Houses the core enterprise logic, transaction boundaries, business validation, and workflows.
- Integration Tier: Connects enterprise business services with persistent databases and external messaging resources.
Core Business Tier Design Patterns Checklist
The Business Tier contains essential architectural patterns designed to decouple client layers from complex business implementations:
- 1. Application Service Pattern: Centralizes and coordinates rules and application logic across multiple business operations.
- 2. Business Delegate Pattern: Decouples presentation-tier clients from business services, hiding lookup and remote service invocation complexity.
- 3. Service Locator Pattern: Encapsulates and caches JNDI or remote service lookups, boosting application performance.
- 4. Session Facade Pattern: Provides a unified, high-level coarse-grained interface to coordinate complex business components and manage transactions.
- 5. Transfer Object (Value Object) Pattern: Packages multiple attributes into a serializable object to reduce network round-trips across remote calls.
- 6. Business Object Pattern: Encapsulates business logic, behavior, and domain state into coherent entity objects.
- 7. Value List Handler Pattern: Manages, caches, and navigates large collections of search results with efficient iteration.
- 8. Composite Entity Pattern: Represents a coarse-grained entity composed of a local tree of fine-grained persistent objects.
- 9. Transfer Object Assembler Pattern: Aggregates composite data from multiple business services or DAOs into a single transfer object.
Key Architectural Benefits
- Minimizes Network Latency: Patterns like Session Facade and Transfer Object optimize remote invocations by bundling interactions.
- Promotes Loose Coupling: The Business Delegate and Service Locator prevent clients from depending on low-level business APIs or network locations.
- Simplifies Maintenance: Centralizing domain rules keeps business logic isolated from presentation frameworks and database code.
