The Observer Design Pattern is a widely used behavioral pattern that defines a one-to-many dependency between objects. When one object (the Subject or Observable) undergoes a change in state, all its registered dependents (the Observers) are notified and updated automatically.
It forms the structural backbone for event-driven programming, Model-View-Controller (MVC) architectures, and modern reactive event systems.
Key Architectural Takeaways & Principles
- Loose Coupling: The subject knows nothing about the concrete classes of its observers—it only knows that they implement the common
Observerinterface. - Dynamic Subscriptions: Observers can be added (
addObserver) or removed (deleteObserver) dynamically at runtime without affecting the subject or other listeners. - Broadcast Communication: State changes are broadcast seamlessly to any number of registered observers without requiring point-to-point hardcoded calls.
- Push vs. Pull Model: The subject can either push detailed state data to observers via method arguments, or observers can pull the necessary information from the subject directly.
Primary Participants
- Subject (Observable): Maintains the list of observers and provides methods to attach, detach, and notify them when state changes occur.
- Observer (Interface): Declares the update interface contract (e.g.,
update()) invoked by the subject during notifications. - Concrete Subject: Stores the actual business state and dispatches notifications whenever that state is updated.
- Concrete Observers: Implement the observer interface to synchronize their local state with the subject upon receiving updates.
