When users interact with web applications, they typically perform operations across multiple requests, such as shopping online, booking tickets, or navigating multi-step forms. The Session State Pattern belongs to the core family of Patterns of Enterprise Application Architecture (PofEAA) and addresses a fundamental question: where and how should user session data be stored?
The Three Session State Patterns
Enterprise architectures manage user session state using three primary patterns:
1. Client Session State Pattern
In this pattern, session state is stored entirely on the client side (e.g., in web browser cookies, hidden form fields, or local storage):
- Advantage: Keeps the application server stateless, which simplifies horizontal scaling and server clustering.
- Consideration: Transmitting session data back and forth in every HTTP request increases network bandwidth and requires encryption to safeguard sensitive data.
2. Server Session State Pattern
In the Server Session State pattern, session information is held directly in the web server's memory:
- Advantage: Very fast access times with minimal data transferred over the network (only a session identifier like a JSESSIONID cookie is sent to the client).
- Consideration: Server memory consumption increases with concurrent users, and handling failover or clustering requires sticky sessions or session replication.
3. Database Session State Pattern
With Database Session State, session data is serialized and stored in an external shared persistent database or cache:
- Advantage: Extremely resilient—if an application server crashes, user sessions remain completely intact and any other server instance can take over immediately.
- Consideration: Adds database query overhead and serialization/deserialization costs on each request.
