Everything You Need to Know About FibroScan for Fatty Liver

If your doctor has recommended a FibroScan, you might be wondering what to expect. A FibroScan is a specialized, non-invasive ultrasound used to measure the health of your liver. It specifically looks for two things: how much fat is in your liver and if there is any scarring (fibrosis). Here is your complete guide to the procedure and understanding your results.

1. What Happens During a FibroScan?

The procedure is quick, painless, and usually takes only 10 to 15 minutes. You'll lie flat on your back, and a technician will place a small probe on your skin over your liver area. The probe sends painless low-frequency pulses to measure how "stiff" your liver is. Unlike a biopsy, there are no needles and no recovery time needed!

2. Understanding the CAP Score (Fat)

The CAP score measures how much fat is in your liver. It's measured in decibels per meter (dB/m). Generally, a score below 238 is considered normal. Higher scores indicate different levels of fatty liver (steatosis), ranging from mild to severe. This helps your doctor determine how much lifestyle change is needed.

3. Understanding Liver Stiffness (Fibrosis)

The stiffness score is measured in kilopascals (kPa). A healthy liver is soft, while a scarred liver becomes stiff. Scores are usually categorized from F0 (no scarring) to F4 (cirrhosis). Knowing your fibrosis stage is critical because earlier stages are often reversible with the right care.

4. How to Prepare

To get the most accurate results, you should fast (not eat or drink anything except water) for at least 3 hours before your scan. It’s also a good idea to wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the right side of your ribcage.

💡 Pro Tip: FibroScan is a fantastic tool for tracking your progress. Many patients use it once a year to see how their healthy changes are actually reducing liver fat and stiffness!
