How to Stay Safe from PhonePe Scams

PhonePe is a fantastic app for quick payments, but scammers are always looking for ways to trick innocent users. Most frauds happen through "social engineering"—which is just a fancy way of saying they trick you into doing something that helps them steal your money.

1. The "Receive Money" Trap

This is the most common scam. A scammer will call you saying they want to send you money (for a prize, a refund, or a purchase). They will send you a payment request and ask you to enter your UPI PIN to "receive" the money.

The Truth: You NEVER need to enter your UPI PIN to receive money. If an app asks for your PIN, money is going OUT of your account, not coming in.

2. Fake QR Codes

Scammers might send you a QR code via WhatsApp and tell you to "Scan this to get your cashback." Once you scan it, a payment page opens. If you approve it, your money is gone.

3. Dangerous Screen Sharing Apps

A fake "customer care" agent might ask you to download apps like AnyDesk or TeamViewer to "help" you. These apps allow them to see your phone screen. They will watch you type your passwords or PINs and then empty your account.

Simple Rules to Stay Safe:

  • Never share your OTP or UPI PIN with anyone, even if they claim to be from the bank.
  • Don't scan QR codes to receive money.
  • Avoid fake customer care numbers found on Google or social media. Always use the help section inside the official app.
  • Check the receiver's name carefully before hitting the 'Pay' button.

Fake Payment Requests in Google Pay? Here's What to Look For

Online scammers are getting smarter every day, and one of their favorite targets is Google Pay users. They often send fake payment requests that look official to trick you into sending them money. In this guide, we'll show you exactly how to spot these red flags and keep your bank account secure.

How the Scam Works

A scammer will send you a "Payment Request" on Google Pay. It might say you've won a prize, or they might pretend to be a customer who accidentally sent you too much money. They will then ask you to "Accept" the request or "Enter your PIN" to "receive" the money.

The Golden Rule: You NEVER need to enter your UPI PIN to receive money. If an app asks for your PIN, money is LEAVING your account, not coming in.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • Urgency: Scammers will try to rush you, saying the offer expires in 5 minutes.
  • Strange UPI IDs: Look closely at the UPI ID. Official requests usually have clear, verified names. Scammers use random strings of numbers or letters.
  • Offers that are "Too Good to be True": If someone you don't know is offering you "Free Money" or "Cashback," it's almost certainly a scam.

What to do if You Get a Fake Request

  1. Do NOT Tap Accept: Simply ignore the request.
  2. Block and Report: Open the request in Google Pay, tap the three dots in the corner, and select "Block & Report Spam."
  3. Check Your History: Ensure no unauthorized transactions have already occurred.

Conclusion

Staying safe online is all about awareness. By remembering that receiving money never requires a PIN, you've already defeated 90% of scams. Share this guide with your friends and family to keep them safe too! Watch the full video above for a real-life look at how these fake requests appear.

Is Your Google Pay Safe? 5 Critical Security Tips

In the world of digital payments, security is everything. While Google Pay is very secure, hackers are always coming up with new tricks to steal money. Here is a simple, beginner-friendly guide to making your Google Pay account unhackable.

1. Never Share Your UPI PIN

Your UPI PIN is the key to your bank account. No bank official, Google Pay employee, or customer care agent will ever ask for your PIN. If someone asks for it, it’s a scam!

2. Receiving Money Doesn't Need a PIN

This is the most important rule: You only enter your PIN to SEND money, never to receive it. If someone tells you to enter your PIN to "receive a prize" or "accept a payment," hang up immediately.

3. Use a Strong Screen Lock

Enable the "App Lock" feature inside Google Pay. Even if someone gets hold of your phone while it's unlocked, they won't be able to open Google Pay without your fingerprint, face ID, or a separate pattern lock.

4. Beware of "Screen Sharing" Apps

Never download apps like AnyDesk or TeamViewer if a stranger asks you to. These apps allow hackers to see your phone screen and steal your bank details while you are using Google Pay.

5. Verify the Receiver's Name

Before you hit "Pay," always look at the name that appears on the screen after scanning a QR code. Make sure it matches the person or shop you are actually paying.

Quick Safety Checklist

  • Update the Google Pay app regularly.
  • Don't use public Wi-Fi for bank transactions.
  • If you lose your phone, block your UPI account immediately.
