MySQL 8 is one of the world's most popular open-source relational database management systems, offering robust performance, reliability, and security for modern web applications.
To interact with MySQL efficiently without typing everything into a terminal, MySQL Workbench provides a graphical interface (GUI) for database architecture, schema design, running SQL queries, and server administration.
Step 1: Downloading the MySQL Installer
- Navigate to the official MySQL community downloads page.
- Select the MySQL Community Server or download the complete MySQL Installer for Windows.
- Choose the larger web installer package (MSI) to ensure all components, including documentation and samples, are available offline.
Step 2: Choosing Components in MySQL Installer
Run the downloaded installer. When prompted to select a setup type, you can select Developer Default or choose Custom to pick exactly what you need:
- MySQL Server 8.x: The database engine itself.
- MySQL Workbench: The visual GUI tool to design tables and run queries.
- MySQL Shell / Connectors (Optional): Useful for programming connectors (such as Connector/J for Java applications).
Step 3: Configuring the MySQL Server
- Port & Network Type: Keep the default TCP/IP port
3306enabled. - Authentication Method: Select Use Strong Password Encryption (Recommended).
- Root Account Password: Choose a strong administrative password for the
rootuser and make sure to save it safely. - Windows Service: Ensure Configure MySQL Server as a Windows Service is checked so MySQL boots automatically with Windows.
- Click Execute to apply configurations, initialize the database, and start the service.
Step 4: Connecting via MySQL Workbench
Once installation finishes, launch MySQL Workbench:
- Under MySQL Connections, click the default connection
Local instance MySQL80(pointing tolocalhost:3306). - Enter your
rootpassword when prompted. - You are now inside the Workbench dashboard, ready to write SQL queries and create schemas!
