UPI scams are becoming more sophisticated every day, but Google Pay has built-in features to help you fight back. Understanding how these scams work and using Google's security tools is your best defense against digital theft.
1. The "Request Money" Trap
One of the most common scams involves a fraudster sending you a "Request Money" notification. They might call you claiming you've won a prize or need to receive a refund. Remember: You only enter your PIN to send money, never to receive it. If you see a request you don't recognize, decline it immediately.
2. Google Pay’s Smart Warnings
Google Pay uses machine learning to identify suspicious transactions. If you are about to send money to someone who isn't in your contacts or has been reported for suspicious activity, Google Pay will show a prominent warning. Never ignore these alerts!
3. Spam Contact Blocking
If you receive a request or message from a stranger, you have the power to Block and Report them directly within the app. This not only protects you but also helps Google warn other users about that specific scammer.
Your Safety Checklist
PIN Safety: Your UPI PIN is your digital signature. Never share it, and never enter it unless you are making a payment.
Verify Identity: Before sending money, double-check the recipient's name and UPI ID. Scammers often use names that look almost identical to real brands.
App Lock: Always use a strong screen lock or the Google Pay app lock feature to prevent unauthorized access to your wallet.
💡 PRO TIP: If you think you've been scammed, use the 'Help & Feedback' section in Google Pay to report the transaction to your bank and NPCI immediately!
