Subscribe NowUnderstanding Generative AI vs AI Agents
Artificial Intelligence is moving fast, and two terms you hear everywhere right now are Generative AI and AI Agents. While they often work together, they do completely different things.
The golden rule to remember: Generative AI creates. AI Agents act.
1. What is Generative AI?
Generative AI is designed to produce new content based on user prompts. Whether you ask for code, an email draft, an image, or a summary, it reads your prompt and generates a direct response.
- Code generation: Ask it to write a Java program or an API endpoint, and it drafts the code immediately.
- Writing assistance: Ask it to write a leave letter or summarize an email thread.
Its primary role is creating content or answering questions in a single step.
2. What is an AI Agent?
An AI Agent is a system that works toward an end goal. Instead of stopping after writing a response, it plans steps, uses tools, executes actions, checks results, and corrects mistakes.
- Goal-oriented: You give it a task like "arrange my 3-day trip."
- Multi-step execution: It checks your calendar, searches flights, compares hotel rates, asks for your approval, and books the reservation.
Real-World Examples
Software Development
Generative AI: Generates a Spring Boot REST API for login based on your prompt.
AI Agent: Opens your codebase, locates existing auth classes, updates the code, runs automated tests, notices any failing tests, fixes bugs, and re-tests until everything passes.
Customer Support
Generative AI: Writes a polite canned answer explaining shipping policies.
AI Agent: Looks up the customer profile, checks live shipping tracking databases, issues an update, and escalates to a human agent if an error occurs.
