Subscribe on YouTubeHow to Stringify a JavaScript Array to JSON
In web development, you frequently collect lists of items—such as user names, IDs, or product titles—stored as JavaScript arrays. When it comes time to send that data from the client browser to a web server, the array must be converted into a standard text format.
JavaScript makes this easy with JSON.stringify(). Just as it works on objects, passing a JavaScript array into JSON.stringify() transforms the list into a valid JSON string formatted with standard square brackets.
Step-by-Step Breakdown
- Define your JavaScript array: Create an array containing your values (e.g., strings, numbers, or booleans).
- Call JSON.stringify(): Pass your array as the parameter to
JSON.stringify(). - Receive the JSON text string: The method returns a single string representation of your array.
- Send or store: The resulting JSON string can be transmitted via HTTP requests or saved locally.
Practical Code Example
// 1. Define an array of names
const names = ["John", "Peter", "Dave"];
// 2. Convert the array into a JSON string
const jsonString = JSON.stringify(names);
// 3. Display the result on screen
document.getElementById("output").innerHTML = jsonString;
The browser displays the string formatted as valid JSON:
["John","Peter","Dave"]
