UPI AutoPay has made paying for subscriptions and recurring bills incredibly easy. However, to protect consumers, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has set specific rules and limits that every user should know. Understanding these "safety boundaries" ensures that your money remains secure while you enjoy the convenience of automation.
The RBI Rules for AutoPay
The RBI introduced a framework for recurring payments to give users more control. One of the most important rules is the Pre-Debit Notification. Your bank or UPI app must send you a notification at least 24 hours before the money is actually deducted. This gives you time to verify the amount or cancel the payment if needed.
UPI AutoPay Transaction Limits
Currently, the standard limit for UPI AutoPay without requiring an additional factor of authentication (like your UPI PIN) is ₹15,000 per transaction.
- Below ₹15,000: The deduction happens automatically once the mandate is set.
- Above ₹15,000: For payments exceeding this amount (like high-value insurance premiums), you will need to authorize the transaction using your UPI PIN each time.
How Safety is Maintained
- Mandate Authorization: No AutoPay can be started without you manually entering your UPI PIN the first time.
- Modify or Cancel: You have the legal right to "Revoke" (cancel) or "Pause" any mandate directly from your UPI app.
- Maximum Limit: When setting up a mandate, you define the "Max Amount" the merchant is allowed to deduct. They can never take more than this amount.
Security Tip: Always review the SMS or notification you get 24 hours before a deduction. If the amount looks wrong, you can stop the payment immediately!
