An unauthorized transaction is any payment or money transfer from your account that happened without your permission. This could be due to fraud, someone gaining access to your phone, or being tricked into sharing your details. If you see money missing that you didn't send, you must act fast.
Step 1: Stay Calm and Act Quickly
The first rule is: Do not panic. Every minute is important when dealing with financial fraud. Staying calm helps you follow the right steps to secure your money.
Step 2: Collect Transaction Details
Open your PhonePe app and go to the History section. Find the suspicious transaction and take a screenshot. Make sure to note down:
- The exact Amount
- Date and Time
- Receiver's Details
- Transaction ID
Step 3: Contact Your Bank Immediately
Call your bank's customer care number right away. Inform them about the unauthorized charge. Ask them to:
- Temporarily block further transactions.
- Block your account if necessary.
- Provide a reference number for your complaint.
Step 4: Report Within PhonePe
Inside the PhonePe app, select the specific transaction and use the 'Help' or 'Report an issue' option. Explain clearly that you did not authorize this payment. Provide all the details they request to start their internal investigation.
Step 5: Secure Your UPI PIN
If you suspect someone knows your credentials, change your UPI PIN immediately. This is the fastest way to prevent any more money from being taken while you resolve the current issue.
Step 6: Report to Cyber Crime Authorities
In cases of fraud, it is essential to report the incident to the national cybercrime portal or your local cyber police. Provide them with the screenshots and transaction IDs you gathered earlier.
How to Prevent Future Fraud
- Never share your UPI PIN or OTP with anyone.
- Keep your phone locked with a strong password or fingerprint.
- Only download PhonePe from official app stores.
- Regularly check your transaction history for any odd activity.
