Spring Framework 4.0 was a groundbreaking generation of the framework, bringing first-class support for Java 8 features (such as lambda expressions, default methods, and the Date and Time API). It also introduced a dedicated spring-websocket module and modern annotation-driven configurations.
1. Core Container & Java 8 Enhancements
The Core Container serves as the backbone of the framework, delivering essential Dependency Injection (DI) and Inversion of Control (IoC) mechanics:
- Core & Beans: Power the foundational bean factory, managing the entire lifecycle and wiring of components.
- Context: Expands upon Core and Beans, adding support for
@Conditionalcomponents, multi-context hierarchies, and enterprise resources. - SpEL (Spring Expression Language): Allows seamless runtime querying and manipulation of bean properties and invocation of custom methods.
2. AOP, Aspects & Instrumentation
Spring 4 continues to provide modular separation of cross-cutting concerns:
- Spring AOP: Decouples transversal tasks such as transaction management, logging, and security from primary business logic.
- AspectJ Integration: Seamlessly hooks into AspectJ's rich pointcut and weaving ecosystem.
- Instrumentation: Delivers class instrumentation and custom classloader support for enterprise deployment servers.
3. Data Access & Modern Integration
The Data Access layer provides unified abstraction over data stores:
- JDBC & Transactions: Declarative transaction management with clean JDBC abstraction templates.
- ORM & OXM: Integration with modern persistence standards including JPA 2.1, Hibernate, and XML Marshalling.
- Messaging & JMS: Introduces key abstractions for messaging protocols and annotation-driven listener containers.
4. Web, REST & WebSocket Architecture
A major milestone in Spring 4 is the expansion of web architectures beyond traditional request-response cycles:
- Spring Web MVC: Enhanced
@RestControllersupport and asynchronous request handling. - WebSocket Module: Provides dedicated bidirectional, full-duplex communication support using WebSockets and STOMP messaging.
