UPI AutoPay is a great convenience, but scammers have found a way to use it against you. While most people are careful about sharing their OTP, many don't realize that approving a mandate is just as dangerous as giving away a password. Let’s learn how this scam works and how you can protect yourself.
How the AutoPay Scam Works
Scammers often pose as customer care executives or delivery agents. They send you a link or a request in your UPI app (like GPay or PhonePe) disguised as a "Refund" or "Verification." In reality, it is a Mandate Request. Once you enter your PIN and approve it, you are giving them permission to deduct money automatically from your account every month!
Red Flags to Watch Out For
- Requests for UPI PIN: Remember, you NEVER need to enter your PIN to receive money or a refund.
- Unfamiliar Mandates: If you see a notification for "AutoPay" that you didn't set up, decline it immediately.
- Sense of Urgency: Scammers will pressure you to "act fast" or your account will be blocked. Stay calm and verify.
Steps to Stay Protected
- Read Before You Click: Always check if the request says "Pay" or "Mandate."
- Check Active Mandates: Regularly look at the "AutoPay" section in your UPI app to ensure no unauthorized payments are active.
- Limit Mandate Amounts: If you must set an AutoPay, set a low maximum limit.
Pro Tip: If you accidentally approved a fraudulent mandate, go to your UPI app settings immediately and "Revoke" or "Pause" the mandate before the next deduction occurs!
