Why Did My UPI AutoPay Fail? Explained

It’s frustrating when you expect a bill to be paid automatically, but you get a notification saying "Payment Failed." While AutoPay is meant to make life easier, several small issues can cause it to stop working. Let's break down the most common reasons so you can fix them fast!

1. Insufficient Funds

The most common reason is simply not having enough balance in your linked bank account on the day the deduction is scheduled. Always ensure your account is funded at least 24 hours before the due date.

2. Bank Server Issues

Sometimes, it’s not you—it’s the bank. If your bank's servers are down or undergoing maintenance during the AutoPay window, the request will time out and fail.

3. Expired Mandates

Every AutoPay instruction (mandate) has an end date. If that date has passed, the payment will no longer trigger. You will need to set up a new mandate to continue the service.

4. Exceeding Payment Limits

When you first set up a mandate, you agree to a maximum limit (e.g., ₹5,000). If the bill amount exceeds this pre-set limit, the bank will automatically block the transaction for your safety.

Quick Fix Checklist:

  • Check your bank balance.
  • Verify the mandate end date in your UPI app.
  • Check if the bill amount is within your mandate limit.
  • Try making a manual payment if the auto-deduction fails twice.
