DynamoDB Capacity Modes: On-Demand vs. Provisioned

Choosing the right capacity mode in Amazon DynamoDB is one of the most important decisions you'll make for your application's performance and cost. Think of capacity like electricity for your house—it's about how much work (reading and writing) your table can handle. Let's break down the two main choices.

1. On-Demand Capacity: Pay for What You Use

On-Demand is like taking a taxi. You don't need to plan anything; you just hop in and go. DynamoDB automatically handles all scaling for you, up or down, based on your traffic. It's perfect for new applications with unknown traffic or apps that have sudden, unpredictable spikes.

2. Provisioned Capacity: The Fixed Plan

Provisioned mode is like owning a car. You decide in advance how many "Read Capacity Units" (RCUs) and "Write Capacity Units" (WCUs) you need. This is great for stable, predictable traffic because it's usually much cheaper in the long run. If your traffic grows, you can also use Autoscaling to adjust these limits automatically.

3. The Cost & Performance Trade-off

Both modes offer the same ultra-low latency and high-speed performance. The real difference is cost control. If you set provisioned capacity too low, your requests might get throttled (rejected). If you set it too high, you pay for what you don't use. On-Demand avoids this but can be more expensive if your traffic is consistently high.

Which One Should You Choose?

If you're a beginner or launching a brand-new app, On-Demand is the safest bet—no planning required! Once your traffic becomes stable and you understand your usage patterns, you can switch to Provisioned capacity to save on costs.
